The lipid compounds of marine organisms and bacteria also contain isomeric fatty acids, which may also be the precursors of isomeric hydrocarbons.

Most iso-paraffins in petroleum are formed in the main oil-generating zone and are generated by thermal decomposition of the aliphatic structure in dried casein root. At this time, both saturated hydrocarbons and unsaturated hydrocarbons are generated. The resulting alkane undergoes a series of catalytic conversions to produce an isoparaffin. Isoparaffins may also be produced by cleavage of the alkyl side chains of steroidal hydrocarbons.
