Concrete water reducing agents have become an essential component of concrete. Its addition can improve the physical, mechanical, and durability properties of concrete. The development of concrete water reducing agents has gone through three generations, namely the first generation of lignin ordinary water reducing agents, the second generation of naphthalene based high-efficiency water reducing agents, and the third generation of polycarboxylic acid high-performance water reducing agents. In the early 1980s, Japan took the lead in successfully developing polycarboxylic acid series water reducing agent, which overcame some disadvantages of traditional water reducing agent. It has such outstanding advantages as low dosage, good slump retention performance, low shrinkage rate of concrete, strong adjustability in molecular structure, great potential for high-performance, and no use of formaldehyde in the production process. Therefore, it has become the key research field and important development direction of modern concrete admixtures.
